The concept of Management styles was developed by Robert Tannenbaum and Warren Schmidt. Management
styles are ways in which you can take decisions and work in a team. A good leader or manager is many a times
characterized by his or her typical style of managing people or projects. An appropriate management style can
contribute to the growth of company while a bad one can even destroy the company.
Managers can try out different management styles and select the most effective one or the one which gets the best
out of the company resources.
Autocratic style of management involves decision making without any inputs from the subordinates. Thus all
decisions reflect the thought process and personality traits of the manager. It is quite possible that highly independent
subordinates, who like to take initiatives, might complain about their inability to work without interference. The
Directive Autocrat takes decisions single-handedly and also closely monitors the subordinates. The Permissive
Autocrat takes his own decisions but gives some space to his subordinates in their particular areas.
Paternalistic management style is also similar to Autocratic but decisions are generally in the interest of the team and
the firm. This style ensures high morale of employees since their social needs are taken care of. The communication
is mostly directed from the manager towards the staff though the employees are encouraged to provide feedback.
Democratic style is where employees’ opinions are taken into account and the decision is taken by majority vote. This
style is most favorable for employees with innovative thinking since communication is intense in both directions. This
style is adoptable where decisions are complex and require expert views or perspectives. In this setup, employees
generally have high job satisfaction; also quality of work is better. A drawback of this management style is the time
lag in decision making, due to participation of many people.
Laissez-faire style involves employees handling their own areas of work completely. The manager’s role is that of a
mentor. This style requires highly self-sufficient and independent people with high commitment and conviction. Also,
very creative environments are a favorable place for this style. At the same time, there is a huge scope of loopholes
in decision making if the leader does not have much knowledge or exposure in management.
In general, there are certain qualities like assertiveness, conflict-resolution, creativity, etc. that every manager should
possess, irrespective of the management style he adopts.

What is risk? Risk is nothing but the chance of failing something. We human beings are so insecure that we always scared of taking
risks. It is not that all risks taken end up failing us. There are people who know how to take risk and there calculation of risk more
often than not helps them gaining something which no one else did. Risk management is something where in you manage your risk,
you calculate and prioritize things and accordingly take a step so that the risk involved is minimized. It is important to identify the
risk and its effect on the objectives to be carried out. Risk management is not something which is very difficult; it is in fact something
we do all the time. We do some risk assessment every time we plan to but something or every time we have choose about a career
option. Each time we analyze the benefits attached with each option and go for the one which has the least number of demerits.
Risk management mainly involves avoiding risk minimization since there are hardly chances where in one can completely do away
with risks because there always a clause of force majeure or act of god, there can be some natural or unnatural event which can put
all the decisions, planning everything at rest.
Risk management in the context of business would also mean analyzing the options available, ponder upon the merits and demerits
of each based on collected data and allocating risks accordingly while making a decision for the company. All risks can never be
fully avoided because of practical implications. Planning has to be done how risks can be managed and how can their effect be
nullified to the greatest extent. Risk assessment is an important from a business point of view because an entrepreneur always
takes risks. He always has to strive and taken and unbeaten path to fulfil his objectives. An entrepreneur’s success lies itself in
the fact that how capable is he to manage the risks attached to his business. The idea behind risk management is to protect the
business form being vulnerable. Financial risks must be reduced to keep the company afloat.
There are various strategies for managing risk, either the risk has to be accepted as inevitable and accordingly budgeted, another
way is transferring the risk to another party. Many a times businesses also close down a particular area where risk is sensed. Thus it
is very important to have a risk management plan.

What is the difference between Microsoft Dynamics GP and Microsoft Dynamics NAV? With what I’ve read online, I don’t see the difference. Could you tell me the differences in their features, interfaces, etc? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Irram
- Microsoft Dynamics GP. The regional markets for Great Plains 9.0 and following Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 version will narrow: United States, United Kingdom, Canada: both English and French speaking, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other English speaking countries in Asia, Africa and Worldwide, plus Spanish Speaking Latin America. Microsoft Dynamics GP 10 will not be available for Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland

- Microsoft Dynamics NAV. Currently Navision has very good presence in Europe, including East Europe: Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia. Microsoft also localized Navision for new markets, where it just moved in: Brazil for example – it was interesting development in Brazil – first Microsoft probed Solomon, then Microsoft Great Plains 7.5 and in 2004 replaced it with localized Navision

Answer by Geri
Microsoft Dynamics GP is owned by Microsoft so I would think that everything about their site is proprietary and protected to prevent unauthorized use or access. I’d go straight to their Service & Support folks, explain what your client company is trying to do, and see if it’s even possible without the need to purchase a service plan.

Question by Andrew: How beneficial is a psychology degree for a career in business consulting?
I am currently in my first year of university doing a business and arts conjoint degree. For my business degree, I am double majoring in management and economics. For my arts I am majoring in classical studies.

I intend to work as a business consultant/analyst, particularly in the strategy and human capital department. I know classical studies doesn’t relate to my career path, and I’m doing it purely out of interest. I was wondering how beneficial switching to a psychology degree for my arts would be (I am also interested in it). Is this a major sought after by business consulting firms?

Best answer:

Answer by Gefilte Girl
I don’t see this as sought after at all.
